It was a monumental day for the Heritage Christian Academy Cross Country team on Thursday in Mora at the Section 5A section race. Our athletes ran extremely well, and all of their hard work throughout the season played out on a brisk fall evening.
The races started with the girls Varsity. It was a very competitive field of runners and our girls finished with their highest finish in school history as 7th as a team. The girls were led by Senior Taylor Lundquist running in a time of 20:01. She was followed by her sister, freshman Simone Lundquist in a time of 21:02. Next we had a pack of girls finish close with 8th grader Gina Solberg (22:04), freshman Abbie Vetse (22:09), and Junior Jenna Wicht (22:14). Freshman Anika Millar and Morgan Bell completed our varsity team. Taylor finished 6th overall, qualifying her for the State Cross Country Meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield next Saturday. It is Taylor’s first state appearance in cross country.
The varsity boys raced followed and was equally entertaining with a lot of great runners in the section. Our boys ran hard and smart and kept building throughout the race and finished very well. The boys were led by Sophomores Travis Miller and Jared Nordstrom, finishing with a photo finish in a time of 17:10. Fellow Sophomore Evan Jacobson followed shortly behind with a time of 17:32. Junior Rolf Preus was our 4th runner in with a time of 18:16, followed closely by senior Matthew Thomforde with a time of 18:22. Sophomore Carter Kneeland and Senior Grant Kokkinen rounded out or varsity boys. Travis and Jared both qualified for the state meet as individuals taking 6th and 8th place respectfully. The team scores were very close from 2nd through 4th place with only 6 points separating the team scores. Our boys edged out Annandale and St. Cloud Cathedral to take 2nd place, qualifying them for the State Meet as a team. This is the first time a Heritage Cross Country team has qualified for state!
